The Penny Park Membership Drive
The Community Built Park in Silver City is being built through the generosity of citizens who contribute the money, vision, design, leadership and labor to make the park a reality. The park is a hit with children throughout Southwest New Mexico, and hundreds of kids climb, swing, skate, bike, and engage in imaginative play there each week. Families come for parties, picnics, reunions, weddings, and memorial services.  It has become the place where “the village” gathers to raise the children. The park board thanks everyone who has contributed their time, energy, and/or money, to realize this dream.  We hope that you are proud of the investment you have made in this park and in our community!

The board is constantly working to make the park even better.  Construction has begun on permanent restrooms and the skating and biking park is in the design phase with construction scheduled to begin this year.  As the park grows, it offers more and more to serve the youth of Grant County.  The Community Built Park is a vital investment in the life of our community.  Abundant research shows that children who have high quality recreational activities available to them are more likely to do well in school and be constructive citizens of the community.

The events that helped to raise the money to build the park, such as the Penny Drive, the Festival of Trees, and others remain vital to funding the park’s day-to-day maintenance.  Virtually ALL funding for operations comes from private donations from local citizens.  The park needs an increase in donations to keep up with all the maintenance and to keep improving the park.

The board has been looking at ways to raise additional money to meet the ongoing needs.  We are excited that ToyTown has been donated to the park, and in the long term we hope it will be a steady source of income.  In the short term, however, we need to offset recent costs of $30,000 to open the store such as stocking the store, hiring our new manager, and getting ToyTown running again.  This is an investment in the park, in Silver City’s historic downtown, and in Janet Hammel’s legacy of striving to do all that we can for the children of our community.

To achieve these goals, the board is offering a membership program to recognize those who make the greatest financial investments in the park.  The Membership Program will provide special recognition and benefits such as discounts at ToyTown.  One window of ToyTown will house a large Giving Tree recognizing the park’s donors in a high traffic location downtown.
