STEINS 1881’s Ghost Town, named after a US Army Officer Enoch Steen.This Railroad Town has some remains of adobe buildings including a Section House, Tack Shop, Community Kitchen and a Girdies Garter.  Located 19 miles West of Lordsburg                                                                                                              


 SHAKESPEARE A place where many a HANGING took place.  It was named for the Shakespeare Mining Company.  BILLY the KID washed dishes at the Hotel Stratford  that is still in tack.  The other old buildings to view are the Assay office, Mail Station, General Store where they still have reenactments are displayed.  A few miles South of Lordsburg                                                                                                                                                                                   


CLOVERDALE began around 1889. Victor Land and Cattle Company purchased the Cloverdale Ranch.  The Store was built 1918 is now used to store hay for the cattle on the ranch, the old Cloverdale Store is a note from those who have gone before. 35 miles South of Animas, NM 338 County Road 1                                                        


Cross Roads in the Dessert a US Calvary Post named CAMP SHANNON Was established North of Hachita because of the Raid on Columbus by the Notorious  PANCHO VILLA.  It consisted of 50 wood frame structures housing over 400 enlisted men to protect the US and Mexican Border.


HACHITA JUNCTION first Train was in 1902.  About 7 miles West in the foothills of the Little Hachet Mountains is and Old GHOST Town of ‘Old Hachita’ where men mined Copper until prices went down in 1920 and the old mine shut down.  Remaining at the Junction is a Mercantile, Hotel, Blacksmith shop, Livery Stables, Saddle Shop and Bookmaker and a barbershop and of course a Saloon.  Wagonloads of Ore were brought to town for shipment on the Railroad.  Cattle were herded from nearby Ranches into Stockyards to be shipped by Rail, which still exists about a mile West of Town. Hachita derived from a Spanish word “hacha” meaning  a small axe or hatchet.  Hachita is off NMSH 9.                                                             


LITTLE HATCHET  Mining Settlements appeared 1870’s to the West in   Little Hatchet Mountains in to the East in  Apache Hills where the discovery of Turquoise, Gold and Silver .  Of course a Band of Apache Indians was a constant threat to the Ranches and Mines in the area.


GRANITE GAP 1879 Ghost Mining Camp where Copper, Zinc, Silver and Lead were mined in the Peloncello Mountain Range. This can still be a Treasure Hunt Adventure.  Famous Gambler John Ringo mined claims here and other Frontiersmen lived in Wall Tent Camps below the mine.  There are Foundations of small rock and adobe, and Cave dwellings still remain.  Water was hauled in barrels on wagons to the camps and miles of underground tunnels. Off old Spanish Trail US 80 not far from Lordsburg, NM


CLAIRMONT GHOST TOWN founded on Copper Creek 1822 in the Mogollons, where it was the headquarters for the Prospectors.  One summer day in the early1800’s Pie-Eyed Charley Shoemaker shot Louis Fay in the Stomach.  At the site of Clairmont remain two sturdy log Cabins and an old corral. 19 miles East of Glenwood, NM


ALMA began 1878 Settlers came after a long journey by wagon and built cabins and began Ranching.  In 1879 a roving Band of Apaches made a raid  killing fome of John Keller’s cattle.  Keller and his party went after the  Apaches killing Toribio the son-in-law of Chief Victoria then  the real  Warpath began.  There was also a man named Wilcox that with his death was the lost secret of the location of a rich Gold claim discovered a few days before. 7 miles north of Glenwood,NM    


MOGOLLON shadows of the Past are still present as you visit this Ghost Town.   James Cooney founded this place when he discovered Gold while on an Army Expedition.   There were 5 Devastating Fires, 4 Floods, Robberies, and Stagecoach Holdups in this small town.  Must see the rock tomb that Cooney was placed.  15 miles NE of Glenwood
